It would take a whole lot of money to pull me away from this job into industry.Įdit: if these special rates are right, then I may have over sold them, but here’s what I found: Įither way, guaranteed step increases and probable COL increases along with fast promotions make up for the low start. TLDR: if NASA is an option, there’s a lot more to consider than just your starting pay. And on the rare occasion that I need to complete a deliverable and work extra hours, I get comp time, so I take it off later. I stop working once I hit 80 hour in a pay period. I could potentially make more in industry, but I will never understand people who complain about the pay at NASA considering you move up very quickly and then stagnate at a pretty decent rate.Īlso, some of my friends in industry talk about unpaid overtime. If I get 2% in January and then 3% for a step increase, that adds up quickly. As a civil servant, I report directly to my team lead who is leading the technical work, and my supervisor is the branch chief.Īnother thing that many people overlook is the annual cost of living increase. The company that wins the contract is managing its employees but doesn’t know much about the actual technical work. When I was a contractor, my “supervisor” would ask me what my job was. Seattle, Washington, United States, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, United States, Huntsville. I get “59 minutes” before most major holidays. Marshall Space Flight Center had 2,335 employees in 2015 with an average pay (base salary + bonus) of 127,331.77. Boeing HBCU Summer 2024 Engineering Internship Program (Paid). I also get extra time off for donating blood. I can charge some small amount of my time helping with things like student launch or the annual Rover Challenge. Then other things like educational outreach. Some people retire with a year or more worth of sick leave. Now I get 13 days of sick leave plus 20 days of annual leave (vacation). As a contractor, I got 13 days of vacation a year. That also leaves out things like benefits. If I was still a contractor, I’d probably be mid 70’s to low 80’s by now. .LOCATION : Huntsville, AL (Space Launch System Program - NASA Marshall Space Flight Center) JOB DESCRIPTION : The Senior Program Analyst will support NASA. In 2.5 years as a civil servant, I went from $61k to $94k. The starting pay was ok, but the raises were atrocious. I worked as a NASA contractor for 2.5 years and went from $65k to $66.5k. So, in the short term, yes, industry pays more. It might even be posted on OPM somewhere. I don’t know the exact amount since I came in at GS11, but I think it’s ~$10k more than what’s on the scale. GS7 and 9 have special rates for scientist/engineer.
